Nina and I spent the morning with Elijah at school with several big events planned. The first, and most important, was celebrating his birthday with his classmates. The second was doing a cooking demo for the class; more on that below.
Lots of singing will occur this weekend, but this was probably the most enthusiastic chorus of Happy Birthday he will hear. No one understands the importance of a birthday like other 4 and 5 year olds.

Nina made nice with the staff.
I really love this preschool. It is Headstart, which means that it is free and for income qualifying families, but I have never felt like the kids were getting "less than" despite what others may think. The staff LOVE the kids, Elijah learns something new every week and the kids get exposed to families from many different cultures.
The people in the red shirts a student volunteers from Seattle University. Andrew and I call them the "Big Kids".
One family a month comes to school and demonstrates how to cook something with the kids. We have an international student population which means that many times, the preparation is for a very exotic dish. We did tuna fish in pita pockets with clover sprouts. I don't know WHAT heritage this is from, but Elijah and the teachers were the only ones that ate much.
The class contributed to the food, by slicing the green onions. And by slicing, I mean completely massacring the poor "straight onions" into a juicy pulp. But they had fun doing it!
Nina kick'n it like a big kid
Happy birthday, Elijah, from your family in London! I can't believe you're 5 already! I'm really impressed you know how to slice onions!
