"The Secret Garden" is our Reading Aloud book at the moment. I remember reading this story when I was young and it has been wonderful to revisit it with my little ones. We usually get a chapter in over breakfast or dinner so that Nina can munch and listen at the same time. I forgot how very English it is and what a advocate for fresh air the author was. Burnett apparently believed that a good stroll and fresh air would cure most childhood ailments.
We have read many of Hans Christian Andersen's books this summer; some of them are a little creepy. It reminds me of the dark whimsy of some of Grimm's tales and most are darker themed then modern children's books. Because his work has endured, there are some really amazing illustrated versions out there; this one is just the latest.
These two are new works from authors we have loved in the past.
Elijah has discovered the graphic novel; totally new territory for me. Thankfully, our library has a good selection of graphic novels that are appropriate for a 7 year old.
The Boxcar Children series has endured the test of time. Both Clementine and Elijah love these books and now Elijah can enjoy the scrappy siblings adventures in graphic form.
Magic Tree House is a series that Elijah consistently checks out of the library. We just discovered that they have a non fiction series call Fact Tracker. Several of these came home with us this week.
Clementine is into the depths of chapter books. She is on her third Roald Dahl book at the moment and somehow I missed this guy when I was younger. He is a hoot and I usually give them a go after Clementine is finished. Very British and Very Funny.
So that is us! Hope you all are enjoying your summer reading as much as we are.
